Self Taught After Effects - Christmas Animation (Inspired by Workshop 2 & 3 with Sara)

After my third workshop with Sara and learning how to work with the rotating and position technique, I decided to have a go myself. In my last workshop I created a clock where the handles moved and several smaller clocks appeared however I wanted to try and create a cartoon that would move as I felt this would be more of a challenge. I also wanted to see if the same techniques applied when working with characters. Below shows my animation:

CHRISTMAS ANIMATION from Amy Winson on Vimeo.

MY BRIEF:
- To illustrate my own background with snow falling
- To do it for a company (In this case I choose the company I work for and decided that their products would fall from a sleigh passing over the background)
- To have some sort of figure to the front of the image

I have set myself a really complex and challenging brief to push myself to my limits.

ILLUSTRATIONS

I started off by illustrating a background with snow falling. Originally when I did this, I hadn't realised the use of the rotating and position in Adobe After Effects therefor did all this manually by slowly moving parts of the image and saving. I found the background a challenge in some points as I wanted to keep it 2D however get a sense of 3D within this.
The reindeer I found challenging at some points especially when it came to his mouth.

AFTER EFFECTS

I faced quite a few problems when working with After Effects which started to frustrate me. Firstly when trying to import the reindeer, he wasn't showing up and instead a black screen was appearing. I realised the opacity was turned right down and this is something that the programme might default too. I also found that when importing the reindeer and trying to keep the layers, for some reason the layers was disappearing, this meant I had no layers to work with. I closed the programmed and shut this down a few times which then the glitch had went.
It was challenging in parts as when the reindeer was moving and jumping his hand would come away from his body and it wouldn't be attached to anything, I pulled his arms in and made them longer to stop this from happening.
I also had problems as when the presents fell from the sleigh they was popping out of nowhere and looking really odd. I decided to make them smaller to fit behind the sleigh and also have them to only show at a certain time in the timeline.
Apart from this, when I got every different layer to work, I found that it worked really well and smoothly. I am really happy with the outcome as this is my first time working with a lot of layers at once and I didn't think I would have succeeded so well.

Motion Graphics using Shapes and Type (Workshop 1 Y2)

Context & Research For my first workshop of Year 2 with Sara our brief was to bring shapes, text, lines and colour to our workshop. I decided to bring in some abstract circles with bright colours and focus on a bright minimal theme. I was unsure on what I wanted to achieve but excited to learn some new techniques. In the workshop we was set a brief we will follow to create a final piece: Each comp will last one second We will use effects transitions  1920 x 1080 Pixels 25 Frame Rate Still unsure of what I would like to create, I decided I would learn the effects first and take everything with an open mind. Even if I learn the effects, I can then use the same techniques for a new narrative. My goal for Year 2 is push myself to try new things and not be afraid to make mistakes, I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone. New Effects: I learnt some really cool effects today, my favouite is the Venetian blinds. This creates a transition from one ...

Drawing Workshop Outside with John (Workshop 6)

Context & Research Before this workshop, I decided to look into comic illustrator Oliver East. He recently came to my University to give a guest lecture and I was interesting as to how he got stuck into each place he visited and how he produced really quick drawings. This has inspired me to try and do this for my workshop to get down really quick illustrations and visuals of Huddersfield which could be used to create some digital art. I was inspired by his comic "Trains are mint" with quick fun illustrations and basic colours to get across what he saw.   The Workshop Today was my final workshop with John, luckily because of the weather our workshop was altered and we was doing something slightly different to our original task. Our task was to go to three different location and draw capturing people, perception, architecture and lines. After the last workshop I was not feeling too excited as I know drawing is my weakness but John gave me some really helpful advic...

Drawing Workshop with John (Workshop 5)

Today in John's workshop we decided to look at perspective in drawing and what we see. I was quite excited as this is something I am always exploring in the briefs in terms of design. Our brief for this task was to work with buildings and windows and find something that created some perspective that we could build up and add some 3D. My Inspiration Drawing This task really did not come easy to me, I struggled a lot to try and get the perspective and I have never learnt this type of drawing before. I began to get really fed up with myself as I am not a natural drawer and have never been, I couldn't get the hang of it. There is so many elements that I got really caught up. I felt a lot more confident drawing the people but drawing buildings and any type of architecture just didn't work out for me. I felt like I started fine and then somewhere along the way got lost. However I did not give up and instead I went off to finish what I had started which leads...
