Self Taught After Effects (Inspired by Workshop 2 & 3 with Sara)

After my few workshops in After Effects with Sara, I felt like I really wanted to try and understand the programme. We have been taught the basics so far and how to use the softwares however I know all the Adobe programmes compliment each other in order to get to a final piece.
I decided I wanted to work with Illustration and Animation which is two things I have NEVER done before. This was challenging and I was really nervous to begin with. After having a basic knowledge of the programme of Adobe Illustrator and Adobe After Effects, I set myself a brief.
BRIEF:

  • TO PRODUCE A PIECE OF ANIMATION WHERE IT HAS BEEN ILLUSTRATED IN ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR & EDITED AND PRODUCED IN ADOBE AFTER EFFECTS
I began by thinking of a topic. I had several ideas:
  • Light switch being flicked on and off
  • The sky changing colour
  • Drink going down in the cup
  • Rain falling
  • Snow falling, sun coming up and then snow disappearing
I decided to go with my final idea as I felt it had a bit more of a narrative and would be a bit more harder. I felt like throwing myself in the deep end would be better as I would have to continue to overcome challenges and It would require a lot of independent thinking.

ILLUSTRATIONS
I started off by illustrating the mountains and the scene in illustrator. I continued to save and edit the scenes slightly until it started to look like a mini movie. I found that I wanted the illustrations to be 3D yet still flat at the same time. I choose to use minimal colours that was very simple and not too bold or bright.

EDITTING
Once I had moved my designs into Adobe After Effects, I then begin to put them together using the same method I had learnt in Sara's workshop. I also worked with text and animations to make the text come into the scene rather than just appear straight away. I also added some music to set the tone. I used Christmas music as I thought due to the time and year and the idea of snow, it started to remind me of Christmas then leading into the New Year.

CONCLUSION
The piece was very time consuming and had to be very detailed in order to fit together and everything to work right at the same times. Their was a lot of components I had to keep an eye on to make sure nothing looked odd. I also found throughout making this their was some elements I would of changed for example the snow ball could of got bigger as it moved down the snow and also the sun would of looked better coming up from behind the mountains however this is a learning process as because I had so much to consider, I was proud to just learn and understand the process.
Below shows my final animation.

Motion Graphics using Shapes and Type (Workshop 1 Y2)

Context & Research For my first workshop of Year 2 with Sara our brief was to bring shapes, text, lines and colour to our workshop. I decided to bring in some abstract circles with bright colours and focus on a bright minimal theme. I was unsure on what I wanted to achieve but excited to learn some new techniques. In the workshop we was set a brief we will follow to create a final piece: Each comp will last one second We will use effects transitions  1920 x 1080 Pixels 25 Frame Rate Still unsure of what I would like to create, I decided I would learn the effects first and take everything with an open mind. Even if I learn the effects, I can then use the same techniques for a new narrative. My goal for Year 2 is push myself to try new things and not be afraid to make mistakes, I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone. New Effects: I learnt some really cool effects today, my favouite is the Venetian blinds. This creates a transition from one ...

Drawing Workshop Outside with John (Workshop 6)

Context & Research Before this workshop, I decided to look into comic illustrator Oliver East. He recently came to my University to give a guest lecture and I was interesting as to how he got stuck into each place he visited and how he produced really quick drawings. This has inspired me to try and do this for my workshop to get down really quick illustrations and visuals of Huddersfield which could be used to create some digital art. I was inspired by his comic "Trains are mint" with quick fun illustrations and basic colours to get across what he saw.   The Workshop Today was my final workshop with John, luckily because of the weather our workshop was altered and we was doing something slightly different to our original task. Our task was to go to three different location and draw capturing people, perception, architecture and lines. After the last workshop I was not feeling too excited as I know drawing is my weakness but John gave me some really helpful advic...

Drawing Workshop with John (Workshop 5)

Today in John's workshop we decided to look at perspective in drawing and what we see. I was quite excited as this is something I am always exploring in the briefs in terms of design. Our brief for this task was to work with buildings and windows and find something that created some perspective that we could build up and add some 3D. My Inspiration Drawing This task really did not come easy to me, I struggled a lot to try and get the perspective and I have never learnt this type of drawing before. I began to get really fed up with myself as I am not a natural drawer and have never been, I couldn't get the hang of it. There is so many elements that I got really caught up. I felt a lot more confident drawing the people but drawing buildings and any type of architecture just didn't work out for me. I felt like I started fine and then somewhere along the way got lost. However I did not give up and instead I went off to finish what I had started which leads...
