After Effects with Sara (Workshop 5)

Today in my workshop we was focusing on working with the cameras and pushing ourselves to more complicated experiments. Our brief was to bring a lyric/quote with some textures and illustrations. I choose the quote "The job of the artist is to to deepen the mystery" - Francis Bacon. I decided to draw a small magnifying glass that can be visible through the camera when working in After Effects. I also looked at a range of textures including an image I took myself of stone/rubble to add the idea of finding objects on the floor in this type of environment, a footprint of a shoe I did myself with paint and scanned in also a range of smoke type textures. Below shows my components:

We then starting by pasting our text on Photoshop and adjusting our text so the background wasn't visible. I did this with Levels. We imported our work into Adobe After Effects and used the Effects Tab, Channel and Invert to make our image blend in with the background. I then went to to the toggle switches and changed my layer style to screen so it blended in with the background. I made sure to make my layer into a 3D object by clicking the icon that looks like a cardboard box. Once I had done this I was ready to make a start, I changed my view to 2 views horizontal and began arranging my work deciding what illustrations and text I would like to have appear first. I arranged this until I had something that looked like this (a mixture of components ranging from start, middle to end). I changed my lens of my camera to 35mm and left the other settings the same.

I had a vision for my work and I really wanted to create a sense of mystery. My ideas was to have the magnifying glass to hoover over some of the words and then the camera will go through the object fast and slow back down to create an eerie feeling, finishing on the second part of the quote and the name of who said it. I worked with the  Point of Interest, Position Tool and also worked with at the start clicking on the squares (shown below) and added a slight curve in order for the camera to start moving to the side.

Below shows my final outcome:

After the Workshop
I really enjoyed todays workshop and I felt like I picked this up quite well. However figuring out the camera was hard at some parts and this is something I wanted to spend a bit more time on. I decided to try this concept again however in a fast moving piece of music. I choose to have a quick burst of imagery at the start which I made myself using chalk and then I scanned this in. In some areas I then worked with the camera technique which I learnt in todays workshop. I felt like this was a combination of everything I have learnt so far and it works really well to the beat of the music. I am really happy with how I am progressing in the workshops. Below shows my final outcome:

Conclusion
When I first got told the brief, I found it really hard to gather my components because I couldn't visualise how my animation would turn out. I decided to do my animation based on a mystery quote. I drew my own magnifying glass and painted one of my shoes and printed this then scanned this in and inverted the colour. My aim was to have the magnifying glass as if it was reading some of the text and then the camera go through the glass. I am really happy with my final outcome and I am shocked as to how I was able to work with the camera and I managed to pick this technique up quite fast. I am starting to feel a lot more confident in After Effects and I have even looked at doing other projects involving animation which is something I would have never done in the past.

Typography Workshop with John (Workshop 3)

In my workshop with John it was all about refining. However I had to make the big decision as to which typography I would continue to pursue. In my previous workshops, I designed the following: Here I have a range of three different typography designs. The first one is more geometrical and fluid at the same time yet follows the structure of my inspiration throughout. The second one also links back to the inspiration however I am unsure on some of the letters for example the C. Finally the last one hasn't followed any inspiration and instead was my own type that I wanted to try. I do like it however their was no process or stages for this one. I decided to refine the first one as I have seen it develop thoughout. I developed this on graph paper, below shows the outcome:  I choose to have some letters slightly thicker than others for example the M & N is thicker than U and V as I know this is a more used letter and I wanted it to be more dominant. I like ...

Editorial with Stephen (Workshop 2)

In my second workshop with Stephen, the main topic was Editorial design. We was focusing on the US standard size for the size of the In Design spread. What is editorial design? Editorial design is for magazines and websites. Once designed, this would be passed on to someone to code. The workshop We started off by setting our page up. I used the following settings below: Once I set up my spread, I then pasted in the image we was using to refer too and scaled up to my margin. I reduced the opacity to 50% so I was able to see what work I was doing on top of the image. I stared working with kerning, tracking and working with scale in order to scale the letters Alanis to fit similar to the document on the back. The reason why we was playing with these metrics and spaces was for us to have more attention to detail and to work away from the default settings.  Below shows the settings I decided to go for and what this looked like. Below shows after me playing with dist...

Self Taught After Effects - Illustration & Animation Trial (Inspired by Workshop 2 with Sara)

After my past few workshops I decided to try and use the techniques I have learnt to create something of my own. I have recently been working on a new project and wanted to try and utilise what I have learnt combined with my own illustration. I decided to work with the position and animation presets in order to set the scene and create a sense of realistic movement in my work. Below shows the outcome: Milk Sea Animation from Amy Winson on Vimeo . I am really happy with this as in the past workshops I have always stayed with the idea of using text or photography and not an actual illustration. I always felt like I couldn't work with anything like this in my work as It wouldn't ever be strong enough. Although this is a short video, I am really happy with where this is going so far and I am looking forward to extending this into something longer and progressing my narrative forward.
