After Effects with Sara (Workshop 2)

Context & Research

Our task was to create something based on a book and due to my love of magazine I wanted to challenge myself to create something slightly different and more unique as Sara said she hasn't seen anyone create something based on a magazine. I decided to research into different styles of magazines including: NEW and OK which feature bold typography with different colour strokes, the use of vibrant festival colours including pink and yellow, words that catch attention such as: shocking, wow, again and the use of exclamation marks to make the words stand out more. Harvard Magazine describes these words as "Word-upmanship" to complicate and make the viewer question as to what is being discussed.

Colour Scheme

I have decided to work with the colours yellow and pink as seen in both of these well known magazines above. I decided to understand the reason behind these colours to make sure they fit the same meaning with the colours.

Bright Pink - "sweet, nice, playful, cute, romantic, charming, feminine, and tenderness"

Yellow - "an attention getting colour, and when used in combination with black, is creates one of the easiest color combinations to read and see from long distances. This is why school buses, taxi cabs, and traffic signs are painted yellow and black."

I agree with the meaning behind these colours and believe this will fit well with the words I want to use. I think it will be interesting to see which words stand out more based on the colour they are matched with.

The Words

I would like to try and word some words that the magazines use to create the idea of shock for the viewer, It would be interesting to see if I can incorporate:

SHOCK

EXCLUSIVE

ENGAGEMENT

UPSET

I am still unsure as to how I can incorporate these through the use of pictures and words but I am excited to challenge myself to do this.

The Workshop

Today I was working with creating an After Effects trailer. The brief was for the trailer to be based on our favourite book, however I am not a big book reader therefor I was struggling and felt confused. I decided to look at what I did read. This included social media, articles and magazines. I felt a chain of thought when I thought about the magazine and this is something I could work with in terms of bold big typography, photography and bright colours.
My aim was to work with bold fonts with drop shadows and big strokes, my own imagery that could present the idea of gossip and celebrities and also vibrant colour such as red, white and black.
I did research on my chosen magazine "new" and found their colour scheme was pink, white, yellow, blue and black. I hit a stand still point when I thought what could I possibly photograph that would be interesting and show the idea of celebrities, money and Hollywood. I remembered I went to LA not long ago and I took a lot of imagery. I looked at my images and realised how much my photography looked like paparazzi and editorial style. I decided to move forward and edit this with block colours.
I then began editing in After Effects following the same ideas as last week and choose a piece of audio that I think told the narrative within my work. Below shows my final outcome.

After the Workshop

I also decided after this workshop to push my skills and challenge myself to work with some editing. My aim was to work with some transitions and have a play around with working with post production and how I can push this piece of work to look like something in the industry. Below shows the outcome. At this point I also worked with fading my audio in and out at the start so that the music didn't just blast the viewer and be too overwhelming as this could ruin the experience for the audience.

Slow Speed Edit
Finally after completing this, I also wanted to have one more go on a similar technique but slightly different so I could look into slowing the middle of the clip down. I know this would be a challenge however I decided to give It a go to see the effect this may have.

Conclusion
I love all the videos for different reasons. I am very proud of myself because I pushed myself to work with new softwares and felt that this was a challenge. However I am glad as the outcome has been amazing. I was also pleased with myself that I could get use to working with the exporting for 1080 side.

Images before editing:

These are my images before editing. Throughout my movie, I used a mix of digital, typography and photography. I choose to do this to give the movie a mixture of techniques that I could work with and for a viewer to constantly have a new focus.

Typography Workshop with John (Workshop 3)

In my workshop with John it was all about refining. However I had to make the big decision as to which typography I would continue to pursue. In my previous workshops, I designed the following: Here I have a range of three different typography designs. The first one is more geometrical and fluid at the same time yet follows the structure of my inspiration throughout. The second one also links back to the inspiration however I am unsure on some of the letters for example the C. Finally the last one hasn't followed any inspiration and instead was my own type that I wanted to try. I do like it however their was no process or stages for this one. I decided to refine the first one as I have seen it develop thoughout. I developed this on graph paper, below shows the outcome:  I choose to have some letters slightly thicker than others for example the M & N is thicker than U and V as I know this is a more used letter and I wanted it to be more dominant. I like ...

Editorial with Stephen (Workshop 2)

In my second workshop with Stephen, the main topic was Editorial design. We was focusing on the US standard size for the size of the In Design spread. What is editorial design? Editorial design is for magazines and websites. Once designed, this would be passed on to someone to code. The workshop We started off by setting our page up. I used the following settings below: Once I set up my spread, I then pasted in the image we was using to refer too and scaled up to my margin. I reduced the opacity to 50% so I was able to see what work I was doing on top of the image. I stared working with kerning, tracking and working with scale in order to scale the letters Alanis to fit similar to the document on the back. The reason why we was playing with these metrics and spaces was for us to have more attention to detail and to work away from the default settings.  Below shows the settings I decided to go for and what this looked like. Below shows after me playing with dist...

Self Taught After Effects - Illustration & Animation Trial (Inspired by Workshop 2 with Sara)

After my past few workshops I decided to try and use the techniques I have learnt to create something of my own. I have recently been working on a new project and wanted to try and utilise what I have learnt combined with my own illustration. I decided to work with the position and animation presets in order to set the scene and create a sense of realistic movement in my work. Below shows the outcome: Milk Sea Animation from Amy Winson on Vimeo . I am really happy with this as in the past workshops I have always stayed with the idea of using text or photography and not an actual illustration. I always felt like I couldn't work with anything like this in my work as It wouldn't ever be strong enough. Although this is a short video, I am really happy with where this is going so far and I am looking forward to extending this into something longer and progressing my narrative forward.
